Sound and Poetry
01. John - Unbelievable: John made this microphone recording of a walk through Torquay town centre on Sunday 4th May, 2008. After having been in the UK only three days, John was racially abused and
threatened on one of his first trips into town since his arrival in Torquay.
02. Vanessa – Unfriendly: Vanessa made this site recording outside her secondary school in Torquay
on Sunday 4th May, 2008. Settling in at school was made difficult for Vanessa by repeated attempts by
other class members to isolate and exclude her.
03. Adelaide – Unfair: Adelaide and friends enacted and recorded the sounds of people jeering and ridiculing
someone in public. As a person of mixed-race this is an experience that she has been through herself and
wanted to reflect the experience in her recording. This site recording was made in a park in St Michaels, Paignton on May 13th, 2008.
04. Imogen – Uknown: Imogen and other members of the group performed and recorded the sounds of young
people whispering and making comments about a person behind their back. Like Adelaide, Imogen has
been subjected to this kind of treatment from complete strangers who do not know anything about
her. Recorded in a park in St Michaels, Paignton on May 13th, 2008.
All of the above soundfiles were processed and recomposed into pieces of music by sound artist and anti-racist worker Elliot Perkins of The Rural Racism Project in Torbay. |
