How does racial harassment affect pupils

Racial harassment can have a lot of impact on victims including

• Makes them feel bad

• That they are unwanted

• Makes them feel sad or angry

• It hurts their self esteem

Racial harassment is about power. Perpetrator will make themselves feel better by making you feeling bad. Their behaviour is designed to make you feel guilty, trapped, helpless, frustrated, angry, alone, and inferior.

Your own feelings and thoughts will be the best indicator about what is happening to you.

For example if think

• I can’t believe this is happening to me

• Why me, what did I do

• If I say anything, everyone will think I’m crazy

You probably are being harassed and should seek assistance.

Remember racial harassment is common, and you are not alone.

Some of the reasons people often do nothing are as follows

The person being harassed asked for it Nobody asks to be abused.

Every person is accountable for his or her own behaviour an cannot blame their behaviour on anyone else.

If it’s not physical is okay Most young people do not harass others. Harassment of any kind is not acceptable, nor should it be expected

If I complain it will just cause trouble Most victims do not want to complain, but just want the behaviour to stop. However, you should seek help from school or your parents.
